The popularity of dark wood floors is growing. It is a growing trend in hardwood flooring as more people are leaning towards beautiful dark tones in their flooring.
However, the one downside of dark hardwood floors is that they are notoriously difficult to keep looking clean. It does not help that the dark color helps to accentuate dirt and dust, making unclean floors so much more noticeable. If you are determined to get darker toned hardwood floors then it is good to be prepared for how to best clean and take care of your floors, because it WILL take more effort.
First, one thing to consider during the installation or refinishing process is to choose a satin or matte finish. Glossy finishes also help to accentuate dirt so it would make it even more difficult to keep your hardwood floors looking clean with a glossy finish. As a result, it would be better to lean towards more of a satin or matte finish.
Second, the type of polyurethane you select will affect how the floor looks and its durability. Dark wood floors will show flaws more clearly and so you want to make sure your floor is durable and is not easily damaged. You’ll want to aim for a high grade polyurethane.
Third, you’ll want to make sure that the floor is cleaned regularly to help to keep from dirt build up. But honestly, the floors will show dirt pretty quickly so if good looking floors are important to you then you’ll be driven to clean regularly because every speck will be noticeable on the floor. You will not need a reminder.
For cleaning it will be helpful to have a high powered vacuum cleaner. You’ll want to make sure that it is a vacuum cleaner for hardwood floors or at least make sure that it doesn’t have a roller brush or that the roller brush is turned off. It would not help your case if the roller brush was on and made a mark on your hardwood floors. That would not help your dark hardwood floors that accentuate everything.
Fourth, it will be helpful to make sure that your family takes off their shoes at the door. This will help to minimize the amount of dirt tracked into the house. Having a basket for shoes next to the door will help with reminding people to take off their shoes. Also making sure to have mats at the door to help keep dirt from coming in from outside.
